Pitch Basics

Pitch shifting vs speed changing - why they differ

Play a record faster and two things happen: it speeds up and rises in pitch. That is a speed change. A pitch changer separates the two - the note moves up or down while time stands still, which is what musicians usually want when they say a song needs to be 'in another key'.

The trick is a phase vocoder: the audio is broken into thousands of tiny overlapping slices, each slice's frequencies are measured, and the slices are reassembled at a new spacing that shifts frequency content without stretching time. Voices keep their natural pace even twelve semitones away from the original.

Practically, small shifts of one to five semitones sound smoothest. Larger jumps remain usable for effects and practice, but expect a slightly softer, processed character on extreme settings - the trade-off for keeping duration intact.

Notes from people who use this often

“I drop warm-up tracks two semitones so younger kids can reach every note comfortably.”

Lucia Moretti - Children's choir teacher

“Guests pick their key, I shift the track accordingly - no more awkward high notes.”

Bunty Sharma - Karaoke host

“Raising my demo vocals four semitones gave me the harmony stack I could not sing.”

Elena Petrova - Musician

Frequently asked questions

Does changing pitch change the speed?

No. This tool shifts pitch only - a three-minute file stays three minutes at any setting. Use the speed changer if you want tape-style changes.

What does a semitone mean?

It is one musical half-step. Twelve semitones equals one octave up or down.

Will large shifts sound natural?

Shifts within a few semitones are very clean. Extreme shifts may sound slightly processed, which is normal for pitch shifting.

Which formats are supported?

MP3, WAV and OGG inputs, exported as the same format, MP3, or WAV.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The phase-vocoder render happens entirely in your browser.
