Why some recordings are too quiet - and how boosting helps
Every recording has an overall level: how loudly it plays compared to full scale. Voice memos captured across the room, lectures recorded from the back row, and phone videos shot in wind all end up far quieter than they should be, forcing you to strain to hear them.
Changing volume multiplies every sample by the same factor, so a recording played at 150% sounds like the same performance recorded louder. Boosting works best before other edits - normalize first, then trim or fade, so later tools work with a healthy signal.
There is a ceiling. Pushing volume past what the recording has room for can clip the loudest peaks into distortion. A modest boost of 120% to 160% is usually enough to fix a quiet take; if you need more, normalizing is often the smarter route because it measures the file first.
“My class playlists come in at different volumes - one quick boost makes every track equally energetic.”
Tara Bennett - Aerobics instructor
“I raise scratch takes to 140% before sending them, so clients actually hear the performance.”
Owen Blake - Voiceover artist
“For sleep tracks I do the opposite - lowering soft chimes keeps the mood calm.”
Grace Kim - Meditation teacher
Frequently asked questions
How much can I boost the volume?
Up to 200% of the original level. You can also reduce volume all the way down to silence.
Will boosting distort my audio?
Very large boosts can clip loud peaks. Moderate boosts of 120-160% are usually clean; use the normalizer for maximum loudness without guessing.
Can I preview before downloading?
Yes. The play button plays your file through a real gain stage at the exact level you chose.
Which formats are supported?
MP3, WAV and OGG inputs, exported as the same format, MP3, or WAV.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser, so your audio never leaves your device.
