Frame Rate
Raise the FPS for smoother motion, or lower it to shrink the file - full control over how your GIF plays.
Frame rate
Higher FPS = smoother motion, larger file. Lower FPS = smaller file, choppier motion.

When to change frame rate
Why frame rate matters for GIFs
Direct control over file size
Frame rate is one of the biggest factors in GIF file size - fewer frames per second means a lighter file.
Smoother motion when needed
Higher frame rates make fast movement look natural instead of stuttering between frames.
Matches your original footage
Set the FPS to match the video the GIF came from for a more natural playback speed.
Faster loading on the web
A lower frame rate GIF loads and plays faster on slower connections.
The setting most people skip that changes everything
Frame rate is one of those settings that's invisible when it's right and obvious when it's wrong. A GIF recorded at a low frame rate looks stuttery no matter how good the resolution is, while one exported at a needlessly high frame rate ends up far heavier than it needs to be for how it's actually used.
The relationship is pretty simple once you see it laid out: more frames per second means smoother motion but a bigger file, fewer frames means a lighter file but choppier movement. There's no universally correct number, a UI walkthrough can look perfectly fine at a lower frame rate than a fast action clip would need.
Matching frame rate to the source footage is usually the safest default. A GIF pulled from 30fps video generally looks most natural exported somewhere close to that, rather than an arbitrary round number picked without checking where the footage came from.
“Matching the GIF's fps to the original recording fixed a subtle stutter I couldn't quite explain before.”
Fenwick Osei-Bonsu - Motion graphics artist
“Our help-center GIFs load faster now that I'm not defaulting to a needlessly high frame rate for slow UI demos.”
Marisol Quintana - Support team lead
“Action clips need way more fps than I assumed. Slower demos need way less. Good to actually see the tradeoff.”
Tobias Rehnqvist - Indie game dev
Frequently asked questions
How can I reduce the FPS of a GIF?
Upload your GIF and select a lower frame rate. Reducing FPS can remove unnecessary frames and make the animation less demanding to process or share.
How can I increase the FPS of a GIF?
Upload the GIF and select a higher FPS setting. Keep in mind that increasing the frame rate of an existing GIF cannot recreate motion information that was not present in the original.
What is the best FPS for an animated GIF?
There is no single best FPS. Lower frame rates can work well for simple animations and smaller files, while higher frame rates are useful when smoother motion is more important.
What happens if I lower the FPS of a GIF?
A lower FPS means fewer frames are displayed each second. This can reduce redundant frames but may make fast movement appear less smooth.
What happens if I increase the FPS of a GIF?
A higher FPS setting can increase the number of frames used for playback. With an existing GIF, however, simply increasing FPS cannot restore motion detail that was removed earlier.
Can changing GIF FPS reduce the file size?
Reducing the frame rate can reduce the amount of frame data in an animated GIF, which may result in a smaller file depending on the source animation.
Can I change a GIF from 30 FPS to 15 FPS?
Yes. Reducing a GIF from a higher frame rate to a lower one can remove some frames while keeping the overall animation recognizable.
Why would I change the FPS of an animated GIF?
Changing FPS can help adjust animation smoothness, reduce unnecessary frames, or prepare a GIF for a particular size, performance, or publishing requirement.
