Take control of the circle before the platform does
When you upload a rectangular photo to a service that displays circular avatars, the platform centers a circular mask and discards everything outside. If your subject stands off-center - nearly always the interesting choice photographically - the automatic crop beheads or decapitates composition arbitrarily.
Pre-cropping to a circle flips the power dynamic. You position the mask, choosing exactly what survives. Transparent corners mean the platform has nothing left to crop; your framing IS the final framing. On services that let users zoom after upload, a pre-cropped circle simply passes through unchanged.
The technical requirement is PNG: JPEG physically cannot store per-pixel transparency, so circular JPEGs fake it with white boxes that glare against dark interfaces. Real alpha channels composite invisibly everywhere, which is why this tool outputs PNG exclusively in circle mode.
